To bring meaning and value into our life, we need to learn and master ourselves as well as not letting the hindrances stop us.
What are the 5 Hindrances to Self Mastery?
I learned about them years ago from the Shaolin Master Shi Heng Yi and his lecture during this TEDtalk :
SENSUAL DESIRE (KAMACCHANDA)
ILLWILL/AVERSION (BYAPADA)
DULLNESS/HEAVINESS (THINAMIDDHA)
RESTLESSNESS (UDDHACCA)
SCEPTICAL DOUBT (VICIKICCHA)
The master also explains that there are 4 methods to help you remove those hindrances:
1. Recognize the state of the mind you are finding yourself in.
2. Accept, acknowledge and allow the situation or peson to be the way it is.
3. Investigate your emotional and mental state by asking questions.
4. No identification: 'I am not the body, I am not the mind, I am not the emotions. It is just that I can see all these 3 aspects about me.
